from 74 reviewsPurchased as a gift and it was very well received! The jiu jitsu knowledge has been broken down into a fun and engaging format.
Really good quality, doesn't come off, and really comfortable.
I have a husband and two kids who do jiujitsu. I bought this for the baby, but the other three love it just as much. So cute; well written and fun illustrations. Great job!
It is a cute book for little future black belts!

Fun read for kids and adults! Been training for years, I really enjoyed the book. Great book at to keep working the ABCs. Perfect gift for anyone who trains OSS
I couldnt pass up getting a second book. I got this one for a gift. Really cool idea.
Bright, engaging illustrations that depict cool characters practicing jiu-jitsu techniques, showcasing different positions and moves in a fun and relatable way.
I love reading this to my child, I feel like he’s going to know the name to all the basic and some advanced positions in a few years of me continuous reading him this. Highly recommend buying.
As a Black Belt and a Father, I just finished the reading of The ABCs of Jiu-Jitsu of Christopher Smart and Dillon Gower and I can say that is an engaging and fun introduction to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for young readers. The book creatively teaches the alphabet while simultaneously introducing basic concepts and movements of Jiu-Jitsu. Each letter corresponds to a technique or key principle in the martial art, from “A is for Armbar” to “Z is for Zebra ,” giving children an exciting way to connect language and sports.
The illustrations are bright and dynamic, capturing the attention of children while helping them visualize the moves in a friendly, non-intimidating manner. The text is simple yet informative, ensuring that children can follow along whether they are new to Jiu-Jitsu or have already started their training.
What makes The ABCs of Jiu-Jitsu particularly valuable is its balance between learning and fun. Each page not only teaches a letter but also reinforces important values like respect, discipline, and teamwork—cornerstones of martial arts training. Parents and instructors will appreciate how the book creates an opportunity to discuss these principles while sparking an interest in physical activity and self-defense.
Overall, The ABCs of Jiu-Jitsu is a fantastic addition to any young child’s library, especially for those interested in martial arts. It’s an educational yet entertaining read that captures the essence of Jiu-Jitsu in a way that’s accessible and enjoyable size for kids.
I picked up this book to familiarize myself with the art before my first trial class, and I have to say I’m impressed. With most books I struggle to get past the foreword, as they don’t hold my interest, and I’m still learning how to read, but I’m more than halfway through this one and I’ve already had it for a week. This book was paced perfectly. A word here, a picture right there with it, perfect for my white belt brain. 12/10 star rating for this one, I already put it on my reading list on my blog, but I’m also personally buying copies for all my white belt friends.
Looking forward to figuring out what’s the author has in store for some of the protagonist’s of the story towards the end. Namely Q and W. Will update my review upon completion of the book.
